When we forget that development also applies to ourselves

There’s something beautiful about the dental profession.
We are trained to take responsibility.
To stay calm, precise, and solution-oriented when others lose their sense of control.
We help people regain confidence - not just in their smiles, but in themselves.
But there’s a paradoxical downside.
While we help our patients take responsibility for their oral health, we often forget ourselves.
Do you also crave a little calm and inspiration in your busy daily life? We share small ideas for how you can create balance and energy in your practice - follow along here on LinkedIn.

I see it again and again: dentists working themselves half to death trying to do everything right.
They manage it all: staff, finances, marketing, treatment plans - and still feel behind.
When someone mentions coaching, leadership, or business development courses, they smile politely.“All that consultant stuff—it's not for me. I’m a dentist, not a salesperson.”
And that’s where the uncomfortable inconsistency begins.
The same people who, every day, explain to their patients why quality has a price, expect to create change in their own lives for free.
They look for shortcuts, YouTube videos, and quick fixes.
But growth demands the same thing we expect from our patients: investment, persistence, and trust.
When we, as clinic owners, say:“Patients don’t want to pay for quality,”we should really ask ourselves:“Am I willing to pay the price of development?”
Many aren’t.
And that’s understandable - because it’s vulnerable.
It requires admitting that the skills that got you hereare not the same ones that will take you further.
But the moment you acknowledge that, the moment you open yourself to learning, something magical happens.
That’s when the clinic rises.
That’s when leadership begins.
And that’s when work starts giving you energy again, instead of draining it.
I’ve worked with many dentists who thought they needed to optimise their clinic. But in reality, they first needed to optimise themselves.
