What is TPO/TPS?
TPO – Treatment Planning Optimisation
Typically refers to adjustments made to a virtual treatment setup (e.g., ClinCheck®, ClearPilot™, etc.).
TPO services usually involve:
-
Tweaking movements
-
Adjusting attachments
-
Refining staging
-
Correcting biomechanical issues
-
Improving predictability
TPO is often used when the original plan (usually prepared by technicians) needs refinement before approval.
TPS – Treatment Planning Support
TPS generally means clinical support during the planning stage, such as:
-
Reviewing records
-
Identifying red flags
-
Suggesting modifications
-
Advising the clinician before approving the plan
TPS is typically limited to the early phase of treatment—before the patient starts.
When do dentists use TPO/TPS?
Dentists usually consider TPO/TPS when they:
-
Are new to clear aligners and want guidance
-
Experience many refinements or midcourse corrections
-
Lack time to manually adjust digital setups
-
Need additional orthodontic insight
-
Feel uncertain about attachments, IPR, biomechanics or staging
-
Want a second opinion before approving a manufacturer-generated plan
Many clinics report that manufacturer-produced setups (often made by technicians) lack:
-
biological realism
-
functional considerations
-
predictable biomechanics
-
alignment with the dentist’s treatment philosophy
This leads them to seek external TPO/TPS services.
How is AlignerService different from standard TPO/TPS?
Traditional TPO/TPS services typically cover only the planning stage.
AlignerService was created to provide something more comprehensive.
Key differences:
A. Who performs the work
TPS/TPO (industry standard):
Usually performed by technicians or support staff, supervised at distance by an orthodontist.
AlignerService:
100% of all diagnostics, planning, corrections and decisions are made by licensed dentists and orthodontists only — no technicians.
B. Scope of the service
TPS/TPO:
Support ends once the plan is approved.
AlignerService:
Support continues throughout the entire treatment, including:
-
planning of refinements
-
evaluation of new records
-
troubleshooting of unexpected tooth movements
-
clinical guidance on functional and dynamic occlusion
-
adaptation of the plan if patient priorities or conditions change
C. Continuity
TPS/TPO:
Different technicians or planners may handle each case.
AlignerService:
You work with one dedicated specialist, who learns your preferences and clinical style.
D. Treatment philosophy and co-creation
TPS/TPO:
Usually a one-way service: the provider adjusts the plan and returns it.
AlignerService:
We follow a co-creation model, meaning:
-
your clinical philosophy matters
-
we adapt the orthodontic plan to your approach
-
your knowledge of the patient is integrated
-
your feedback shapes the final design
This results in more aligned, predictable and personalised plans.
E. Predictability & workflow impact
Dentists using AlignerService typically experience:
-
fewer refinements
-
fewer rescans
-
reduced chair time
-
smoother workflows
-
improved patient communication
-
higher acceptance of treatment plans
Because the entire case is guided from beginning to end - not only the first digital setup.
